Transhumanz

Autumn Special

Immaterial UNESCO Cultural Heritage Transhumance
The sheep crossing in the Schnalstal, also known as transhumance, is a unique tradition and part of UNESCO World Cultural Heritage. Every year in June, shepherds with up to 3,000 sheep move from South Tyrol over the Niederjoch and Hochjoch mountains to the summer pastures in the Austrian Ötztal valley and are the only ones in the world to cross a glacier and a national border during this migration. The return in September is celebrated with a traditional shepherd's festival and marks the end of the impressive two-day march up to 44 kilometers through rocks and snow. The shepherds are using the same path as our ancestors, among Ötzi.

Culture and Fun

Archeoparc Schnalstal
In the archaeological open-air museum, visitors can explore reconstructed houses from the Stone Age, try out old craft techniques, and learn more about the history of Ötzi's discovery. A special highlight is the view of the Ötzi discovery site, which can be admired through a telescope. The Archeopark also offers interesting activities such as archery and bread baking.
