Transhumance in Val Senales –
old South Tyrolean tradition

Val Senales and its surrounding have preserved old traditions and customs up to the current day. One of these traditions is the Val Senales sheep drive, the largest on the Alpine ridge, which is still practiced by farmers the same way as hundred of years ago.

Every year in June the shepherds take their ca. 3.000 sheep up to alpine pastures in the Ötztal Valley which are property of Val Senales farmers since 1415. They follow the tracks of the first discoverers; the most popular is Ötzi, the iceman. This march over the Alpine ridge is 44 km long. For two days the shepherds cross steep couloirs and snow fields on the way to the pastures. In September the shepherds return home with their animals and are welcomed with a big celebration.
